“At the heart of our relationships, both with humans and dogs, lie attachment styles.” - Jt Clough
The Spilled Coffee
Jennifer, a successful 54-year-old lawyer, was enjoying a peaceful Saturday morning with her husband, David, and their lovable Labrador Retriever, Jackson. As Jennifer sipped her coffee and caught up on some reading, Jackson wagged his tail in anticipation of the up coming Saturday morning walk, bumped into the table, knocking over her mug and sent coffee splattering all over the floor.
Jennifer, calmly assessed the situation. She got up to clean the mess, it was an accident. Everything was fine. She wiped up the spill and poured herself a fresh cup of coffee, maintaining her composure throughout.
David, on the other hand, reacted with an unregulated response. His automatic reaction was to lash out at Jackson, his anger flaring. "Damn it, Jackson! Look what you've done!" he shouted, his voice exuding frustration and irritation. "Jennifer, I can't believe this. Can't we have one morning without something going wrong?"
Jennifer, knowing David's disproportionate response, tried to diffuse the situation. "David, it's okay. Accidents happen, and it's not a big deal. Jackson didn't mean to spill the coffee."
Despite her calm reaction, David struggled to let go of his anger. He felt a twinge of jealousy at Jennifer's ability to remain calm and collected, while he was having a hard time getting a grip on his own emotional turmoil. His energy remained uncomfortable, creating a tense atmosphere in the room.
